Edward Włodarski has passed away

Edward Włodarski

Sadly, a life well lived ended last Friday: Mr. Edward Włodarski, born in Miłoradz, Poland, died in Brisbane, Australia.

Australian Poles will always be grateful for his work in the local branches of the Polish Ex-Serviceman's Association and Polish Political Prisoners Association, but even more so for his kindness, empathy and honesty.

Poland will never repay his role in the "Solidarity" Trade Union, for which he suffered imprisonment by the communist regime, and which contributed to that regime’s collapse. That required courage, integrity and determination.

We at the Institute of National Remembrance will always remember Mr. Włodarski’s help in carrying our mission, educating the public about Polish history, in Australia. We won’t forget his enthusiasm, commitment or hard work.

Edward Włodarski, rest in peace.

***

Edward Włodarski was employed as an equipment operator in the Gdańsk Port Authority. He had been a member of the “Solidarity” Trade Union since 1980.

After Martial Law was imposed, he co-organized and participated in a strike at his workplace which took place from 15-19 December 1981. Despite a prophylactic interview with him, Edward Włodarski did not cease his opposition activities, which resulted in his internment at the Strzebielinek Detention Center from 5 November to 8 December 1982.
