On 8 September 2024, celebrations were held at Kahlenberg (Vienna) to mark the 341st anniversary of the Battle of Vienna and the 41st anniversary of the visit of John Paul II at the shrine. At the ceremony the Institute of National Remembrance was represented at by Jan Józef Kasprzyk, advisor to the IPN President.
The ceremonies, presided over by Archbishop Dr. Adrian Józef Galbas SAC, Metropolitan of Katowice, were attended by numerous representatives of the clergy, state and local authorities, officials, uniformed services, scouts and the Polish community.
The celebrations began with the lighting of candles and laying of wreaths at the Kahlenberg parish cemetery, on the grave of Poles killed during the defense of Vienna in 1683.This was a solemn moment of reflection on the sacrifice and heroism of those who sacrificed their lives in one of the key battles in European history. During the ceremony, a special roll call of remembrance was held, and the 11th Lubuska Armored Cavalry Division named after King Jan III Sobieski fired an honour salute in tribute to the heroes who had died.
The participants then proceeded to the Polish National Shrine, where wreaths were laid at the monument to King Jan III Sobieski. The figure of Sobieski, the hero of the Siege of Vienna, was honored as a symbol of courage and determination in the defense of Christian Europe. The ceremony also provided an opportunity to recall the significance of Poland's role in European history.
Another highlight of the celebration was a solemn Mass, during which Archbishop Dr. Adrian Józef Galbas recalled the role Christianity had played in history and present day Europe.
Official letters from Polish President Andrzej Duda and from the Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia were read out by Minister Andrzej Dera.After the official part of the ceremony, participants took part in the traditional harvest festival, which was accompanied by an artistic program by a military orchestra and a band.
The main organizer of the celebration was Father Roman Krekora CR, rector of St. Joseph's Church on Kahlenberg.
