The ceremonial decoration of the laureates of the "Ambassador of Polish History”Award at the Royal Łazienki Park in Warsaw, 23 October 2024

The international "Ambassador of Polish History" award is an honorary distinction established by the IPN's President. It is granted to individuals and organizations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to commemorating the history of the Polish Nation and supporting the IPN in its statutory activities in the field of research and education. The "Ambassador of Polish History" is a continuation of the "Witness to History" award for non-Polish individuals and organizations, which was granted in the years 2015–2022.

 The international "Ambassador of Polish History" award is an honorary distinction established by the IPN's President. It is granted to individuals and organizations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to commemorating the history of the Polish Nation and supporting the IPN in its statutory activities in the field of research and education. The "Ambassador of Polish History" is a continuation of the "Witness to History" award for non-Polish individuals and organizations, which was granted in the years 2015–2022.

The award is presented to individuals and institutions active outside Poland and especially involved in cultivating Polish historical memory, committed to preserving, promoting and enhancing the knowledge of the recent history of Poland, and to uncovering forgotten facts and people who have rendered great services to the Polish Nation.

On 7 October 2024, the IPN President Karol Nawrocki, Ph.D. presented the distinctions to two winners at the British Parliament in London during the ceremony of the opening of the Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom exhibition. Iwona Golińska, founder of the Polish Sue Association, and George Byczyński, Editor-in-Chief of the British Poles portal received the award for the commitment, engagement and implementation of the IPN Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom project by their organizations on the British Isles. Below is the list all winners including those announced on 24 October in Warsaw.

  1. Karol Biernacki (Hungary) – Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Szeged, Hungary. A historian and an archivist, highly passionate about and actively promoting Poland’s history. He has been actively participating in the life of the Polish diaspora for 40 years now. He tirelessly organizes numerous exhibitions and conferences and was the first to translate the biography of Witold Pilecki into Hungarian. He is the head of the Founders Council of the Wacław Felczak Foundation, an organization tasked with promoting the cultural heritage of Polish and Hungarian peoples.

 

  1. Gilbert Van Landschoot (Belgium) – the founder and owner of the first Canada-Poland War Museum in Agedem (Belgium) - an establishment that has been founded solely by the Van Landschoot family. A large part of the Museum’s exhibition is devoted to the 1st Polish Armoured Division commanded by general Maczek. A huge amount of original military uniforms, decorations, arms and other pieces of equipment is on display at the Museum - most likely the largest facility of this kind in the world devoted to the history of the 1st Polish Armored Division. Mr. Van Landschoot offers guided tours of the Museum and organizes, with the help of his daughter, numerous educational programmes targeted primarily for children and youths. Gilbert Van Landschoot’s activity is also highly beneficial for the development of Polish-Belgian cooperation. In recognition of this efforts, Gilbert Van Landschoot received the following: a special diploma from Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s Foreign Minister, in 2009, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland from Lech Kaczyński, the President of Poland, in 2010, and the Golden Polish Army Medal from the Minister of National Defense in 2011.

 

  1. Bartłomiej Moszoro (Argentina) – Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Rosario, he actively participates in promoting Poland’s history in Rosario, Argentina. He shares his passion by organizing thematic exhibitions, lectures and issuing publications. He has organized, inter alia, exhibitions devoted to the Warsaw Uprising, the breaking of the Enigma Code or the blessed Ulma Family. Via his social media accounts he publishes videos reminding the viewers of important anniversaries and events related to Poland’s recent history. He also organizes interviews with those who were personal witnesses to the country’s history, and donates numerous documents to Poland’s archives, including those of the Institute of National Remembrance. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements in promoting the interests of the Polish diaspora in Argentina and fostering Polish-Argentinian relations, he received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland from President Andrzej Duda in 2022.

 

  1. “Vereniging Eerste Poolse Pantserdivisie België” ("1st Polish Armoured Division Association in Belgium”) was established in Belgium in 1968 upon the initiative of general Maczek. Currently, approximately 190 families are members of the organization, including Belgian nationals who are interested in the history of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, children and grandchildren of Polish soldiers who stayed in Flandres after the war, as well as Poles residing in that region. The Association aims to preserve and commemorate the history of the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Belgium. It also strives to promote and foster social and cultural exchange between Poland and Belgium. The organization’s mission is pursued by issuing the “Komunikat” quarterly, taking the stock of graves of Polish veterans buried in Flandres, screening documentaries about general Maczek, maintaining a Facebook page devoted to the 1st Armoured Division and its history, participating in Belgian and foreign ceremonies commemorating Polish soldiers, as well as organizing various events to promote Polish traditions, for instance Christmas Eve suppers.

Laureates of awards presented at the “Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom” exhibition organized by the Institute of National Remembrance in the British Parliament:

  1. “British Poles” web portal (UK) - a medium that focuses primarily on issues concerning Poles living in the UK and on Polish-British relations. It was created to promote Polish history and culture and the country’s good name in the UK and worldwide, often by commenting on or correcting information about Poland’s history. The portal is also taking care of Polish veterans and their graves; it has organized a fund-raiser for a bust of general Władysław Anders which was unveiled at the National Army Museum. It acts in the capacity of a patron, organizer and supporter of a number of projects related to Polish history and culture. The portal is the world’s most popular social media platform used by Poles living abroad and reaches millions of people every single day. As all content is published in two language versions, the articles are read by recipients in the UK, the US and by other English speakers, thus promoting Poland’s history, culture and good name all over the world.

 

  1. “Polish Sue Association” (UK) - an organization that holds patriotic events commemorating Polish heroes and Poland’s national holidays. Some of the events held include the following: “ORP <Błyskawica> Days”, “Light a Candle for Polish Heroes in England”, “Day of Remembrance of Poles Who Saved Jews”, the Katyń Massacre Commemoration Day, anniversaries of the Warsaw Uprising and the introduction of Martial Law in 1981.
