On 4 May 2025, the official anniversary event celebrating the liberation of KL Ravensbrück and commemorating the victims of that German camp took place in Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Ravensbrück.
The Deputy President Mateusz Szpytma, Ph.D. represented the IPN at the event, which included a mass said in the former Zellenbau bunker, and consecration of the Holy Mother figure, funded by Poles.
On May 3, at the former camp site, the unveiling of a memorial plaque to political prisoners of many nationalities and performance of poems and stories by Polish prisoners took place. "Fragments of Remembrance," delivered in four languages, were jointly prepared by the Prawy Brzeg Association, Family of Former Inmates of German KL Ravensbrück and the Institute of National Remembrance.
Their poetry, scribbled in secret on scraps of paper, is the source of our understanding and familiarity with that reality. Their writing carries the memory of what happened here, passed from generation to generation. That memory will be preserved, no matter how hard the world will try to forget, said Mr. Szpytma.
The IPN Deputy President also visited Chojna, northwestern Poland, which in WW2 was part of Germany and had one of KL Ravensbrück sub-camps. Mateusz Szpytma, Ph.D., laid flowers at the former camp site, participated in a mass in the local church and spoke at the remembrance event in 3 May Constitution Square.
