The event was attended by MEPs, scouts, representatives of the Institute of National Remembrance and the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the Polish People's Republic, and invited guests. Among speakers were Members of the European Parliament Małgorzata Gosiewska and Adam Bielan, Deputy President of the Institute of National Remembrance Prof. Krzysztof Szwagrzyk, and Jacek Pawłowicz from the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the Polish People's Republic.
Prof. Krzysztof Szwagrzyk pointed out that honouring Captain Pilecki in the European Parliament is a unique event that has special significance for Poles:
This is a great day for us, Poles. We are meeting here, in the European Parliament to pay tribute to our hero, Captain Witold Pilecki. We, Poles, are proud to have had him in our history, to be able to relate to him, admire him, and draw example from his unwavering, beautiful, patriotic attitude, presented by him until his last moments.
After the unveiling of the plaque, the participants moved on to the official opening of the exhibition dedicated to Captain Witold Pilecki. The exhibition prepared by the Warsaw Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance depicts the most important stages of Pilecki's life – from the fight for independence in his youth, through conspiratorial activity in Auschwitz, to post-war persecution and the execution of the death sentence by communist authorities in 1948.
