On 28 August 2025, at the Garrison Cemetery in Gdańsk, we commemorated Danuta Siedzikówna “Inka” and Feliks Selmanowicz “Zagończyk” on the 79th anniversary of their execution by the communists. The ceremony was attended by the Deputy President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Prof. Karol Polejowski.

Danuta Siedzikówna “Inka” and Feliks Selmanowicz ‘Zagończyk’ served in the 5th Vilnius Brigade of the Home Army under Major Zygmunt Szendzielarz “Łupaszko.” She was a nurse, he was an officer. For their unwavering fight for a free Poland, they were imprisoned by the communist authorities and murdered after a brutal investigation. They were shot to death on 28 August 1946.

On the anniversary of their execution, representatives of state and local authorities, parliamentarians, uniformed services, delegations from social organizations, cultural institutions, veterans, scouts, and numerous residents of Gdańsk paid tribute to the heroes.

A letter from the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, was read out by his advisor, Jan Józef Kasprzyk. In it, the President emphasized that as a form of tribute to the heroes of our freedom, we are called to serve the independent Republic of Poland and to pass on their ideals from generation to generation.

“Today, we pay tribute to two heroes who lived beautifully and died tragically. As they stood before the firing squad, before the bullets reached them, they both shouted out ‘Long live Poland’. Only free, and fearless people could die in this way,” added Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

The Deputy President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Prof. Karol Polejowski, recalled the Institute’s role in preserving Polish memory, identifying Polish heroes, restoring their names, returning them to their families, and giving them a dignified burial.

“We will search for those who were murdered by the communists and buried in death pits. We will find them and give them a proper Christian burial, because that is our task and what their families expect of us,” said Prof. Karol Polejowski.

The next part of the ceremony took place at the wall of the Detention Center in Gdańsk. This is where the Heroes spent their last days and it is also here that they were murdered by the communists. The gathered guests paid their respectsand laid flowers under the memorial plaque dedicated to the murdered, which is located on the wall of the Detention Center.

The final part of the ceremony, took place in the church of the Salesian priests in Gdańsk's Orunia district. The Mass was followed by the laying of flowers at the nearby monument to Danuta Siedzikówna "Inka."
