On 10 November 2025, a delegation from the Institute of National Remembrance took part in a ceremony at the grave of Colonel Władysław Zgorzelski, commander of the 10th Dragoon Regiment of General Stanisław Maczek’s 1st Armoured Division. The ceremony took place at Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh.

On behalf of the Institute of National Remembrance, Adam Siwek, the Director of the IPN Office for Commemorating the Struggle and Martyrdom, addressed those gathered, emphasizing the Colonel’s exceptional place in the history of the Polish Armed Forces:

“We have gathered here today to mark the granting of the status of a grave of a veteran of the struggle for Poland’s freedom and independence to the resting place of the late Colonel Władysław Zgorzelski. We are standing by the grave of a man who truly deserves this distinction - a great patriot, an outstanding soldier, a passionate horseman, and a cavalryman to the core.”

He further stated that Władysław Zgorzelski was an officer with an extraordinary biography - a participant in all of the major military campaigns of the 20th century, from the Polish–Bolshevik War to the battles of the 1st Armoured Division in Normandy. He earned distinction not only as a commander but also as an accomplished equestrian - a multiple champion in national and international competitions - and, after the war, as a renowned riding instructor in many countries around the world.

The focal point of the ceremony was the reading out, by an officer of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, of a formal notice signed by Adam Siwek, Director of the IPN Office for Commemorating the Struggle and Martyrdom, confirming the inclusion of Colonel Władysław Zgorzelski’s grave into the Register of Graves of Veterans of the Struggle for Poland’s Freedom and Independence under entry number 6071. The grave was also marked with a special plaque bearing the inscription “Grave of a Veteran.”

The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths and the lighting of candles on the Colonel's grave.

The IPN delegation included Marek Jedynak, Ph.D., Director of the Office of the President of the IPN; Adam Siwek, Director of the IPN Office for Commemorating the Struggle and Martyrdom; and Dorota Lewsza Ph.D,, Head of the Division of Counteracting Defamatory Statements within the IPN Office of International Cooperation.
