On 19 March 2026, a commemorative ceremony dedicated to Sergiusz Piasecki - a writer and publicist, officer of Polish intelligence, and soldier of the Home Army - was held at the Belweder Palace in Warsaw. The event was attended by the Deputy President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Dr Karol Polejowski.
Sergiusz Piasecki was presented as a profoundly multifaceted figure: a veteran of the Polish–Bolshevik War, a leading intelligence operative, a smuggler, a prisoner, an artist, a strong opponent of communism, and a devoted patriot. Referring to the words of the current President of Poland - the then President of the Institute of National Remembrance - Agnieszka Jędrzak, Undersecretary of State at the Chancellery of the President, remarked during the opening ceremony: “We need such heroes, such life stories, and such people who demonstrate not only to Poland, but to the entire world, the dangers posed by totalitarian regimes.” She expressed hope that Piasecki’s legacy would inspire younger generations to carry forward the memory of this remarkable figure.
Highlighting the exceptional nature of Piasecki’s biography, Dr Polejowski noted that his life “reads like a ready-made screenplay - not only for a historical drama, but also for a gripping thriller.” He added that a fitting closure to this extraordinary life is the fact that Piasecki now rests at Warsaw’s Powązki Cemetery alongside another Polish hero, Zygmunt Szendzielarz “Łupaszka” - a symbolic convergence of two individuals who reached greatness by taking very different paths.
The ceremony featured a staging of Notes of a Red Army Officer, directed by Sławomir Gaudyn and performed by the Studio Theatre from Vilnius. A panel discussion, with participation of Piasecki’s son, Professor Władysław Tomaszewicz, as well as Tomasz Muskus and Bartosz Piasecki also took place. It was moderated by Dr. habil. Tomasz Balbus, head of the Branch Archive of the Institute of National Remembrance in Wrocław.
The event formed part of the celebrations marking the Year of Sergiusz Piasecki, established by resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. Accompanying the commemoration was an exhibition prepared by the Institute of National Remembrance, titled The Seven Faces of Sergiusz Piasecki, curated by Dr. habil. Tomasz Balbus and Marcin Marczak.
