A decision of exceptional symbolic and historical significance has recently been taken at the Scottish Parliament. The adoption of the official motion (S6M-21142), lodged by Annie Wells MSP, together with her accompanying letter of recognition, represents a clear affirmation of the role Poles played in Scotland’s history and highlights the importance of continued efforts to preserve this shared heritage.
The motion formally welcomed the ceremonial opening of the “Trails of Hope: The Odyssey of Freedom” exhibition prepared by the Institute of National Remembrance and presented at the Scottish Parliament on 13 March 2026. It further notes that the exhibition tells the dramatic story of Polish soldiers and civilians who, after leaving Soviet captivity with General Władysław Anders, travelled across Central Asia and the Middle East to continue the fight for the freedom of Europe during the Second World War.
"It was particularly meaningful to mark this exhibition alongside the 85th anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz, a moment of immense hardship for the west of Scotland. The recognition of the role played by Polish sailors, including the crew of ORP Piorun, serves as a powerful reminder of the deep and enduring bonds between Scotland and Poland, forged through shared sacrifice and strengthened over generations.
The exhibition also offered an important opportunity to reflect on the lasting contribution of the Polish community in Scotland. Across many decades, Polish families have played a valued role in communities across the country, enriching our civic, cultural and economic life in countless ways", Annie Wells wrote
Moreover, the motion also acknowledges the courage of the people of Clydebank and the bravery of Polish sailors, including the crew of ORP Piorun, during the Clydebank Blitz of 13–14 March 1941, highlighting the enduring symbolism of these events for Polish–Scottish solidarity. Furthermore, it emphasises the vital role of the Polish Social and Educational Association in Great Britain in organising the commemorations marking the 85th anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz, as well as recognising its broader contribution to promoting Polish historical memory and strengthening ties between the Polish diaspora and Scottish institutions.
We wish to express our sincere appreciation to Annie Wells MSP for her initiative in bringing forward this motion and for her continued commitment to recognising the historical experiences and enduring contributions of the Polish community in Scotland. Equally significant was her role in enabling the presentation of the “Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom” exhibition at the seat of the Scottish Parliament, which contributed to a deeper public understanding of the enduring ties between Poland and Scotland and enhanced the exhibition’s educational and commemorative value.
We also extend our appreciation to all partners and contributors, including the Chancellery of the President of Poland represented at the event by Undersecretary of State Agnieszka Jędrzak and the Polish Sue Association. Their efforts, participation and dedication ensured the success of the presentation of the exhibition at such a prestigious location. Initiatives of this nature remain essential to preserving historical memory and strengthening the longstanding ties between Poland and Scotland.
