On 3-4 November 2011 in the conference room at Grand Hotel in Łódź (ul. Piotrkowska 72) an international scientific conference was held entitled "The Soviet system of concentration camps and prisons. The form of political repression in Central and Eastern Europe in the first half of the 20th century". The participants included researchers from Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and Hungary. The aim of the conference was both a general summary of research on the Soviet prison system in the years 1922-1953, as well as the exemplification of this problem in depth discussion on single camps, prisons and examples of the organisational system.
The conference has been organised by the Łódź Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance.
