Commemoration to Captain Witold Pilecki in Melbourne

On 16 February 2014 a commemoration ceremony to Captain Witold Pilecki took place in the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne. The event was attended by Pauline Rockman, the JHC President, Warren Fineberg, the Executive Director as well as His Excellency Paweł Milewski, Polish Ambassador to Australia, Excellency Shmuel Ben-Shmuel, Israeli Ambassador to Australia and the delegation of the Institute of National Remembrance including Dr. Łukasz Kaminski, President of the Institute of National Remembrance and Dr. Rafał Leśkiewicz - Director of the IPN Archives. Representatives of local authorities such as Bruce Atkinson, the Speaker of the upper house of state parliament, were also present, as well as representatives of cultural institutions and other associations. The ceremony was a culmination of years of efforts of the The  Pilecki Project Committee, founded by a group of members of the Polish community, supported by the Honorary Consul General in Melbourne Dr. George Luk- Kozika.

The representatives of the  Pilecki Project Committee handed the Jewish Holocaust Center with certified copies of the archival documents relating to Pilecki's stay in Auschwitz (provided by IPN). Also, the publication "Report W. KL Auschwitz 1940-1943" by Captain Witold Pilecki translated into English, has been presented during the event.

During the stay in Australia, President of the IPN also met with the local Polish community and Polish students of one of the Polish Saturday schools. He also attended a meeting with representatives of the Australian Institute of Polish Affairs and delivered a lecture on coming to terms with the Communist past at the Monash University.
