The second part of the project "Transitional justice period in the context of Tunisia" takes place in Warsaw on 6-13 April in the framework of the "Support for Democracy" programme. It is organised by Solidarity Fund PL in cooperation with the Institute of National Remembrance and the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.
Participants include representatives of the Tunisian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Ministry of Interior, as well as members of non-governmental organisations dealing with human rights.
A visit to the Institute of National Remembrance opened the programme and included lectures on Communist dictatorship in Poland, the Polish experience of transition and ways of coming to terms with the difficult past. The delegation learned about the vetting procedure and the role of archives in the process of democratisation.
The audience was very interested in the lectures delivered by Prof. Andrzej Paczkowski and Krzysztof Persak, Director of the President's Office. They were asked a number of questions concerning the fall of Communism in Poland and consequences of the vetting process.
On the following day the delegation visited the archives and learned how documents are being organised and digitalised. A part of the workshops took place in the Public Education Office of the IPN, where the participants got acquainted with methods of teaching history and discussed the issue of remembrance in Poland. The group also visited the Warsaw Rising Museum.
During their stay in Warsaw the group visited the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, where they learnt about the Foundation's work during the Communism era and discussed the role of the Ombudsman and the access to archives in the context of human rights.
At the end of the week-long visit, the participants met journalists and editors from leading Polish newspapers.
