On the occasion of the 70. anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, the presidents of Poland and Germany – Bronisław Komorowski and Joachim Gauck have opened the exhibition "Warsaw Rising" in the Topography of Terror Documentation Centre in Berlin. The exhibition was prepared by the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising. Dr. Łukasz Kamiński, President of the Institute of National Remembrance, has also taken part in that event. The exhibition will be on display until 26 October.
A joint project of the Museum of Warsaw Uprising and the Topography of Terror Documentation Center, the exhibition was created to commemorate the 70. anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. As the director of the Museum of Warsaw Uprising has put it, the event had no precedence in the history of modern Polish-German relations.
The exhibition illustrates the history of Warsaw since 1918, a city bustling with life, its' development brutally interrupted by the outbreak of the World War II. A special focus was put on the phenomenon of the 63-day long Warsaw Uprising and the price Warsaw and Poland had to pay for it. The story continues, showing the rebirth of the city after years of occupation, a dynamic city which is a leader in this part of Europe. The exhibition is particularly addressed to the young generation.
Archival photography from insurgent chronicles, documents, but also sounds and multimedia elements were used in the exhibition. The organisers have also prepared a website meant for mobile devices and a bilingual, German and English catalogue distributed in the Terror Documentation Centre and the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising.
The Terror Documentation Centre in Berlin is located in the former headquarters of the SS, Gestapo and the Sicherheitsdienst. It was the office of Heinrich Himmler and the Ministry of Aviation headed by Göring, and it was there the decision to raze Warsaw to the ground had been made, shaping the fate of Poland for years to come.
