Delegation from Cuba in the IPN - Warsaw, 17 October 2014

On 17 October, a group of Cuban bloggers, journalists and human rights activists came to the Institute of National Remembrance in the course of a study visit to Poland.

During the meetings at the IPN headquarters in Warsaw, subjects such as historical and civic education, documenting the past (incl. war crimes and the crimes committed by the state security services during periods of dictatorship) were discussed with directors of several IPN offices. Some of the participants had a chance to visit Warsaw during study visits before, this time they were introduced to the work of the Chief Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation, the Vetting Office and the IPN archives.

The Cuban group was invited to Poland by the Lech Walesa Institute. Their trip aims at learning about the civil society, free media, judiciary and regional government in Poland. On 23-25 October the group will participate in the international conference "Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy", organised by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. IPN is a co-organiser and will lead a panel on transitional justice.

Among the participants were the Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez (author of the blog "Generacion Y"), Robert Guerra, an independent journalist brutally beaten by government forces, Dagoberto Valdes Hernandez, a Catholic activist and editor in chief of the magazine "Convivencia", Elizardo Sanchez, founder of the Cuban Human Rights Commission and Jorge Luis García Pérez knowns as "Antunez", a dissident and political prisoner, who was kept behind bars for 17 years.
